Incorrect temperature evaluation leads to jerking and failure of the DSG
With the above-mentioned vehicle type, the direct shift gearbox (DSG) can start to jerk and judder while the car is being driven. At the same time, the gear shift indicator in the instrument cluster may flash. In some cases, the vehicle may no longer start up again properly.
The cause is an incorrect evaluation of the transmission oil temperature by the transmission control unit. As a result of this misinterpretation, the transmission control unit activates the clutch protective function even though there is no critical overheating. This in turn results in jerking, torque reduction and, in extreme cases, disconnection of the clutch so that the vehicle no longer starts to drive.
The problem has been identified by the vehicle manufacturer and rectified during the course of a service campaign using a software update. This involves updating the transmission control unit software to the latest version. The update corrects the incorrect evaluation of the clutch temperature, which means that the protective function no longer kicks in unnecessarily.
A software update can be carried out, for example, via Hella Gutmann macsRemote Services or by using a pass-through-capable diagnostic device from the mega macs series. Furthermore, registered access to the vehicle manufacturer's online portal is required. If the appropriate equipment is not available, please contact an authorised specialist workshop.
It is possible that so far not all vehicles affected have been rectified. If vehicles with such problems end up at your workshop, please bear this information in mind and check whether the service campaign has been carried out or not. For more details on this, if applicable, contact the vehicle manufacturer or a workshop authorised by the said manufacturer. If the service initiative has indeed already been carried out, this is noted in the vehicle's service booklet.
Once the cause of the fault has been rectified, delete the error memory and then carry out a test drive.
