Implausible shifting behaviour caused by a fault in the ABS/ESP system

In the above-mentioned vehicle types, faulty shifting behaviour of the DSG gearbox may occur. The cause of the fault is not always to be found in the gearbox periphery. If no direct fault is found in the transmission periphery during troubleshooting, a possible cause of the fault may be a defective ABS sensor ring.

Firstly, the error memory should be read out using a suitable diagnostic device and checked for entries in the ABS/ESP system. Errors such as "Wheel speed sensor signal faulty" should be treated as a priority, as the transmission control unit is dependent on error-free wheel speed signals for precise gear changes. By using a diagnostic device, the parameters of the individual wheel speeds can be queried and analysed during a test drive. If incorrect wheel speeds are detected during the test drive, special attention should be paid to the ABS sensor ring on the affected side. Corrosion can damage the sensor ring to such an extent that the ABS/ESP control unit can no longer detect a proper signal.

The affected wheel bearing must be removed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and the sensor ring checked for damage and corrosion. A heavily corroded sensor ring can also cause grinding marks on the sensor head of the wheel speed sensor. If there is visible damage during the visual inspection, the wheel speed sensor must also be replaced.

Once the cause of the fault has been rectified, delete the error memory and then carry out a test drive.

IMPORTANT
For your own safety and the safety of other road users, test and trial drives must always be carried out with a second person (driver) present. Please always observe the maintenance and repair notes provided by the vehicle manufacturer when carrying out such work and checks. Further information on checking the ABS sensor system can be found in Hella Tech World in the section on “Checking and replacing the ABS sensor”.
