Application
Electric hatchback/tailgate actuators enable convenient, safe and automatic opening and closing of the hatchback/tailgate. They are a central component of modern comfort systems and, depending on the system integration, are controlled by pressing a button, using a remote control device or by means of gesture control.
Design and function
The electric hatchback/tailgate actuator is a central component of modern comfort systems and enables the hatchback/tailgate to be opened and closed automatically. An electric motor drives a threaded spindle in the actuator. This creates a linear movement with which the hatchback/tailgate is opened or closed. In the course of such an action, integrated sensors monitor the position and movement of the actuator.
This control happens via a higher-level control unit that handles communication with the vehicle electrical system. The sensors integrated in the actuator can also be used to implement safety functions such as anti-pinch protection and obstacle detection.
The actuator is mechanically mounted via fastening heads at the ends, which are plugged on to ball studs on the vehicle body and the hatchback/tailgate. A spring integrated in the fastening head holds the actuator on the ball stud. This creates a flexible, movable connection that ensures reliable power transmission.

1 What is the task of an electric hatchback/tailgate actuator?
The actuator ensures convenient, safe and automatic opening and closing of the hatchback/tailgate. It is a central element of modern comfort systems and is activated at the touch of a button, by using a remote control device or by means of gesture control, depending on the system integration.
2 How does the actuator work?
An electric motor drives a threaded spindle in the actuator, generating a linear movement that enables the hatchback/tailgate to be opened and closed. Integrated sensors continuously monitor the position and movement of the actuator. Control happens by means of a control unit that is networked with other vehicle systems via a data bus. This ensures precise movement, while obstacle detection and anti-trap protection provide the necessary safety.
3 In which vehicles is it used?
The actuator is installed in a large number of modern vehicles, e.g. Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Opel, Porsche, Tesla, VW and many more. HELLA covers a wide range of applications – ranging from volume models to premium vehicles.
4 Why does it need to be replaced?
Mechanical or electrical defects can cause faults when the hatchback/tailgate is opened and closed, as can internal short circuits or contact faults on the actuator's plug connection. A failure not only impairs the comfort function, but it can also pose a safety risk.
5 What advantages does the HELLA hatchback/tailgate actuator offer wholesalers?
The HELLA actuator impresses with its high load-bearing capacity for stable performance and also because of its robust, weatherproof design that is optimised for continuous use. Reliable safety functions such as the anti-pinch protection contribute to injury prevention, while the broad market coverage ensures that suitable solutions for a wide range of vehicle manufacturers are on offer.
6 What market opportunities are there for wholesalers?
More and more vehicles are being equipped with electric hatchbacks/tailgates as standard, from compact cars to premium SUVs. This trend is significantly increasing the need for spare parts and is creating a steady demand in the aftermarket. HELLA is planning a constant expansion of its program so that wholesalers can benefit from this growing trend at an early stage.
