Deliver safely with HELLA AVAS

Audible pedestrian warning system for e-mobility
31-01-2022

Delivery services had already become an integral part of everyday life long before the COVID-19 pandemic. No matter whether they are delivering parcels or food: it pays to be mobile so customers rate you highly. The same applies to commercial vehicles for tradespeople. In times of high petrol prices, bans on vehicles with diesel engine or CO2 restrictions, many tradespeople are switching to electric vehicles. They are particularly suitable for inner-city traffic and short journeys – and bring about a number of advantages.

However, road users struggle to actually hear electric vehicles. This is because they generate almost no driving noise at low speeds. The acoustic vehicle alerting system (AVAS) generates a sound that is based on the combustion engine, thus giving road users early warning.

The key points in short

  • For vehicles with fully electric drive (PEV), hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and
fuel cell vehicles (FCV) with silent motor to boost the safety of road users
  • Simulates simple engine noise
  • Space-saving and compact loudspeaker
  • Low power consumption

Clearly audible

As of July 2019, any new all-electric vehicles (PEV), hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and fuel cell vehicles (FCV) in the European Union must feature an audible warning system to reduce the risk of accidents. And from July 2021, all newly registered electric models must be equipped with an acoustic vehicle alerting system. In other words, at a speed of up to 20 km/h (EU), vehicles must generate a noise similar to that of an internal combustion engine. In the USA, the threshold value is 30 km/h. At speeds above this, the tyre rolling noise is sufficient.

And this is exactly where HELLA comes in. The acoustic vehicle alerting system (AVAS) fulfils the legal requirements optimally and offers a little something extra: AVAS can also play customised sounds – through a space-saving and compact loudspeaker. The system is automatically activated upon starting the vehicle, generating a clearly perceptible, artificial engine noise up to the defined speed and when reverse gear is engaged. HELLA AVAS automatically fades out the signal when the set speed exceeded. It can also be switched on and off manually. It communicates with the vehicle’s on-board electronics via CAN BUS in real time.
