High-definition with HD84 is a core module of headlamp

As the first high-definition digital lighting system, the matrix HD84 module provides illumination 2.5 times that of the traditional lighting system.

HD84 module is provided with 84 LED bulbs arranged like matrix in 3 rows. The light intensity is adjustable in the range of 0%-100%, and accurately controlled by a single LED chip. On the basis, the light distribution can be adjusted in consideration of traffic, weather and road conditions.

When a vehicle enters the lighting area of an auto lamp, the module will selectively cover up the location of the vehicle to prevent the driver from being glared. Furthermore, HD84 headlamp can properly reduce the luminance of the location for the conditions like bend and traffic sign, to prevent the driver’s line of sight from being affected by reflection of bright light.

HD84 headlamp also provides lighting solutions that reduce LED luminance even under conditions like adverse weather, reduce glare effects in wet road condition and avoid glare of upcoming traffic . Furthermore, HD84 module with low beam dynamic ligting  based on bend  vehicle condition .

The module won the “Red Dot Design Award” in 2016, and has been installed on new models of Mercedes-Benz E-Class. HD84 headlamp has elevated the lighting technology to new stage.

Electric Power Steering improving eficiency

With the increasingly strict environmental regulations, rising fuel price and voice of reducing CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, fuel-efficient products are highly demanded. On this basis, HELLA has developed and manufactured EPS control unit which is light and maintenance free with good returnability, and can be flexibly installed in all vehicles ranging from compact to premium types.

Unlike traditional hydraulic power steering systems requirng lasting power from the engine, EPS is powered by the motor during steering only for lower fuel consumption.  Based on the integrated input signal of sensor, control module adjusts the required steering force by controlling the motor power of EPS, for fuel consumption of 0.8L per 100 km and a reduction of 20g of CO2 emissions.

EPS is also of great importance to the development of automated driving and driver assistance systems. The expanding market of both systems requires higher and higher safety performance. As the core of vehicle control, HELLA engages in research and development of highest automotive safety integration level (D-ASIL level, namely, Automotive Safety Integration Level, which has A/B/C/D four levels in total, D is the highest level) and EPS controller with low failure rate, to suit the demands of future market for EPS.

Conectivity solutions improving driving comfort

Passive entry/start function is a feature in many vehicles that highlights luxuries, which prevents the vehicle from being locked accidentally with the wireless transmitter inside, protects the driver from rain, eliminates the need for door-deicing in winter and minimizes the sensitivity to weather. These functions are achieved by a number of separate control units. Besides providing the traditional access control system with active locking and unlocking controlled by wireless transmitter, HELLA has further developed passive entry/start system which allows for remote unlocking without worry about looking for keys.

Since the development of the  Since local development of the first generation of passive entry/start system  HELLA has been committed to integrating multiple standard functions into ECUs which interconnect with each other through CAN as the receiver of wireless remote control. The electronic steering column (ESCL) and the latest generation of immobilizer can also be integrated to enhance antitheft protection.

Although traditional remote keys do improve comfort and safety by active locking and unlocking, HELLA’s new passive entry/start system and drive authorization system elevate comfort and safety to new levelsby providing protection in the case of unauthorized entry and use. Besides getting into the car with the key, the driver may interconnect the car with cell phone. Once the driver gets in, the interior antenna will get ready for drive authorization when a valid ID transmitter is detected, to allow the driver to control the engine by START/STOP button.

High-efficiency battery management system

With the development of new EV , there is a higher demand for safety and reliability of their lithium battery. Management of batteries used in electric hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) is one of key factors to technology development. HELLA provides a set of electronic products for lithium battery, a battery management system which achieves energy balance, extends endurance mileage, ensures safety and reliability of EV lithium battery and improves the user’s experience for new energy vehicles by monitoring voltage, temperature and current. HELLA’s lithium battery management system includes: battery cell controller for cell equalization, voltage and temperature measurement, including battery management unit for battery monitoring algorithm and high-voltage current sensor based on current divider. These electronic products ensure safe use of lithium battery. The full set of high-voltage lithium battery management system is modularized and extensible, applicable for various platforms and independent of the battery technology used, of highly cost-effective system architecture.

Individuation BMW 7 series carpet light

The common carpet  light is installed on the outside rearview mirror or below the cab door, for illuminating a small area of ground below it. As a specialist in automobile lighting system, HELLA has first developed and launched a new solution – carpet light whose LED module is fixed on the sill plate in rear of the front wheel.

The light from the illuminator is bright and clear, and can be projected in the same direction to a distance over 4 m.  This makes the vehicle highly identifiable in a dark parking lot. By now, the illuminator has been installed on the models of BMW 7 series.

HELLA does not ignore the fact that carpet light below the sill plate is easy to be polluted or damaged. Micro-optical elements specially designed by Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering can accurately project light to particular locations on the ground. These lenses have many built-in micro lenses of which a single one only produces a faint band of light due to small size, but multiple lenses together can project bright and dazzling light. Therefore, light from others can be projected onto the covered area even though some of lenses on the surface of LED get stained. Slight dirt will not impair the lighting effect of such “light curtain-type” illuminator.

Radomes - Radar permeable emblems

Coming from the aerospace technology the term radome refers to the cover in front of the radar system. Onboard radar sensors are used to measure distances in between vehicles or between vehicles and objects, which provides the basic input for ACC (adaptive cruise control) and FCW (forward collision warning).

To detect objects or vehicles ahead, and providing the best possible detection range, the middle front grille position is the best choice. Reserved for the OEM emblem this sensor position can not be used by replacing the most important OEM signature part. Due to most of the common emblems are chromed, the radar beam would be blocked. HELLA shows an innovative radome which looks like the original emblems but is permeable the radar beam.

HELLA is the world leader in sustainable, precision development and production of radomes, and use the latest 3D visualization tools to support customers in implementing their design requirements.

Styling rearlamp with edge lighting technology

In automotive applications, LED not only shows excellent energy-saving potentiality known to all, but also makes great contributions to the improvement of brand recognition; especially in the design of tail lamp, LED gives extraordinary performance in terms of attractive lamp shape by perfectly combining with optical technology!

HELLA provides a variety of technical solutions for rear lamp, including common options like direct and indirect mirrors, double mirror, and round light guide plate, as well as such popular solutions as light curtain, surface light-emitting optical fiber. The edge-lighted tail lamp with flat light pipe available in diversified shapes represents HELLA’s latest technology.

Edge lighting system gives out light by LED light source in the rear of edge lighting structure. After total reflection by internal structure, the light is reconstructed by the vector of optical structure on the front surface of edge lighting device for purposes of intended functions.

Edge lighting system could apply to all functions of signal lamps. According to different functions, walls with minimum thickness of 4 mm are required for front and rear position lamps, and thicker walls for stop lamps and DRLs. Furthermore, the system is more favorable to diversification and complication of tail lamp design, and functions could be modeled or structured by etching or EDM.

With special texture or structure, edge lighting body is suitable for various applications and style designs, and available in sharp outlines. Products displayed at the event are furnished with edge-lighted flat light pipe and have sharp outlines, especially the middle narrow line which conveys a sense of personality and future. This technology is mainly used in luxury high-end models.

At the event , HELLA electronic products make up a large proportion of exhibits at HELLA’s booth. When we talked about HELLA before, most of us only knew lighting products , yet it has deep technical reserve for electronic products though it appears to be low-pitched in this regard. Its fisical year figures also show that electronic business is currently occupying a decisive position in its income.

Sustainable development of the enterprise relies on its innovation strength in products and technology. At this event, HELLA showed its competitive products and demonstrated its persistence in R&D and Chinese market.
