Automated driving: FORVIA HELLA integrates the latest NXP chip technology into ForWave7HD radar sensors
- The focus is on developing and industrializing high-resolution radar sensors (“ForWave7HD”) with up to 32 transmit and receive channels each
- Due to their high performance, ForWave7HD radar sensors are central key technologies for automated driving at SAE Level 2+ and 3
- The first customer project for high-resolution radars will enter series production in mid-2028 with an order volume in the three-digit million-euro range
Lippstadt, 8 January 2026. International automotive supplier FORVIA HELLA and NXP® Semiconductors, the trusted partner for innovative solutions in the automotive market, are working together in the field of high-resolution radar technology. The two companies announced this at the occasion of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The focus is on the latest product generation of high-resolution radar sensors (“ForWave7HD”), with up to 32 transmission and receive channels each.
ForWave7HD radar sensors are essential key technologies for automated driving at SAE Level 2+ and 3. To implement functions at these automation levels reliably and safely, radar sensors require significantly increased performance and object detection capability. Based on its enhanced resolution and the large number of transmit and receive channels, FORVIA HELLA’s ForWave7HD radar precisely detects even small objects and, with state-of-the-art antenna and chip technologies, provides a detection range of up to 400 meters, an expanded field of view, and optimized near-range sensing. FORVIA HELLA will bring its first company-wide high-resolution radar into series production from mid-2028 for a global premium manufacturer. The customer project’s order volume is in the three-digit million-euro range.
Felix Schmauch, responsible for the global Product Center Autonomous Driving at FORVIA HELLA: “Cutting-edge technologies require powerful partners. The series nomination is a milestone in our product roadmap. Combining our decades of experience in radar sensor technology with NXP’s semiconductor expertise enables us to meet the requirements of the latest functions for automated driving reliably, efficiently, and safely.”
Meindert van den Beld, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Automotive Radar and ADAS at NXP: “Together with FORVIA HELLA we shape the future of high-resolution radar technology. Leveraging our third-generation imaging radar chipset, with the S32R47 radar processor as a cornerstone, this collaboration underscores the critical role of high-performance semiconductor solutions for the mobility of the future. Together, we are accelerating the development of next-generation driver-assistance systems and paving the way for truly automated driving.”
As part of this collaboration, FORVIA HELLA assumes overall responsibility for the product and contributes, in particular, its 25 years of expertise in hardware and software development for radar sensors as well as in industrialization. NXP, in turn, contributes its pronounced expertise in semiconductors. The semiconductors transmit the high-frequency signal and receive the echoes of the waves. On this basis, objects are detected and their direction, speed, and distance are determined. The high performance of NXP’s chips is therefore a decisive factor in enabling the functionality of the ForWave7HD radars.
