If the oil level is too low, the temperature too high or the oil pressure is not right, the warning signs light up in the dashboard, so that expensive engine damage can be effectively prevented and engine performance improved; the recorded data is also an important input variable for the engine's thermal management. Oil sensors from HELLA are primarily responsible for ensuring that the oil level is monitored precisely and reliably throughout the entire engine operation. The 100 millionth oil sensor has now rolled off the production line at the HELLA electronics plant in Bremen. HELLA is the global market leader in this field, supplying 18 different customers and covering a good 90 percent of the worldwide market with its main product, the ultrasound-based oil sensor PULS.

"Our oil sensors are an excellent example of the many electronic helpers installed in vehicles, without which our everyday mobility would not be possible," says Marco Döbrich, who is responsible for the sensor business at HELLA. "Yet the oil sensor is by no means a product of the past. Admittedly, we are in the midst of a comprehensive transformation towards electromobility. Nevertheless, combustion and hybrid engines will not disappear overnight. Here in Bremen alone, we will therefore manufacture at least 50 million more oil sensors over the next ten years, plus another 20 million units at the plant in Xiamen.

" Since the start of the first series production at the end of 2006, when the first generation of the PULS was launched in Bremen, a global development and production network has been established, in which Xiamen and Timisoara are also involved in addition to Bremen as the lead location. In 2016, the fourth product generation has already been launched, and generation three is also currently still being produced on the fully automated production lines in Bremen and Xiamen.

At the same time, plans have already begun to transfer the technological know-how of oil sensor technology to other functionalities. For example, the technology could possibly be used in applications where levels of other liquids need to be measured. Corresponding possibilities and areas of application are currently being evaluated..
