HELLA receives CES 2023 Innovation Award
The main lighting technology of a headlamp is in the module. To bring this complex component into even sharper focus the Product Center Lighting Modules was formed. It’s time to take a closer look at the new organizational unit.

For a headlamp to bring light to the road, one component is of particular importance: the module. In a highly complex interaction, its LED light sources, primary optics and lens bring light images onto the road. "Therefore, a module is clearly the heart of the headlamp for me. It contains all the technology for the main light," explains Peter Neuhoff, Head of the Product Center Lighting Modules. The fact that the development and production of such modules were combined in a Product Center on July 01 of this year is a logical step for him: "By bundling our competencies, we will be able to exploit the development potential in the area of modules even better in the future. In addition, this pools global responsibility for results for the module organization in a single unit," says Neuhoff. The decision was also based on a strategic realignment: "Our goal is to standardize the lighting modules even more; we will primarily implement individualizations in other areas of the headlamp instead. The fact that we now combine all activities in the modules area - from development to production - in a single organizational unit gives us greater striking power in this respect," Peter Neuhoff continues. Close cooperation with colleagues from the Product Center Headlamps will nevertheless continue, since the modules in the headlamp must be closely interlinked with the design, other components and functionalities.
Strong growth prospects
The Lighting Modules Product Center employs over 150 developers worldwide. It includes the three well-known product lines BiLED Modules, headed by Stefan Jüde, Matrix Modules, headed by Jiří Kubíček, and SSLX Modules, headed by André Rosenkranz. With the establishment of the new Product Center, the Technology Lighting Modules section, headed by Florian Herold, is being set up. "Here we are investing in a new team to drive the topics of active portfolio management, module configurations and module standardization," explains Neuhoff. "The establishment of this new team shows once again the importance that lighting modules have and will have within the Business Group Lighting." One focus of this team will be to place digital lighting systems even more broadly in the market. Those modules make it possible to adapt the light distribution to the customer's wishes and to the worldwide laws, by means of software. "In doing so, we no longer have to constantly reinvent the wheel, which gives us additional freedom to focus on optimization and innovation," Neuhoff said.
In addition to digitalization, Neuhoff believes the future of modules clearly lies in the technical implementation of slim designs. "We want to become the technology leader in slim modules. That is our declared goal," says Neuhoff.
