Manage a business sustainable – this is one of the central challenges of our time. HELLA has set itself ambitious targets as part of the Sustainability Roadmap and reports on its progress in a new Sustainability Fact Sheet. In addition to environmental protection, HELLA also reports on topics relating to social factors and business ethics in the factsheet.
Planet: HELLA conserves resources
To protect the environment, HELLA strives to promote the circular economy and to manage resources sustainably. "In 2022, we were able to make significant progress. For example, we are on track to become a CO2-neutral company with a carbon-neutral value chain by 2045," says Anke Sommermeyer, Head of HELLA’s Corporate Sustainability Office. Our carbon footprint has decreased by 10 percent in 2022 compared to 2019. Thus, HELLA's carbon footprint along the value chain was around 7.3 million tons of CO2 equivalents in 2022. This corresponds to the CO2 emissions of 654,000 people in Germany. The core drivers behind the CO2 reduction are an increased share of HELLA products for electric vehicles, the increase in climate-friendly green electricity in HELLA production and in the supply chain, and improved data quality.
In its Sustainability Factsheet, HELLA also reports on water consumption and waste generation for the first time. "We monitor the impact of our production activities on people and nature very closely. For example, for years we have been recording the amount of waste generated at our plants, such as rejects and packaging waste, and implementing measures to avoid waste: By 2025, we want to reduce waste at our plants in relation to sales by 9 percent compared to 2019," explains Arndt Sommer, Head of HELLA Environmental Management.
People: Share of female professionals and managers increased
HELLA is convinced that diversity is both a source of motivation for employees and a driver of innovation and performance. To promote equal opportunities, HELLA aims to continuously increase the proportion of women in professional and management positions. In 2022, this was 25 per cent, and it is expected to rise further to 27 per cent by 2027.
Business: Anchor sustainability as a purchasing criterion
For HELLA, sustainable corporate success also means assuming ecological and social responsibility along the entire value chain. HELLA therefore has clear expectations of a sustainable supply chain in which human rights and environmental protection are respected. "We are currently introducing a mandatory sustainability assessment for suppliers. Together with EcoVadis, a market leader in assessing corporate sustainability performance, we will evaluate our suppliers and work with them to track action plans for improvement. We are driving this approach forward together with Faurecia," says Thomas Erfkemper, Purchasing Quality and Project Manager.
