What impact does FORVIA HELLA's business activities have on the climate and the environment? What does the company do to protect its employees from accidents at work and to develop them further? How is compliance with human rights ensured along the supply chain? The FORVIA HELLA Sustainability Report 2023 takes these and many other questions relating to the environment, social issues and sustainable corporate governance to a whole new level.
Challenge and driver of innovation
For the 2023 financial year, FORVIA HELLA is reporting on sustainability in 11 chapters and with a total of around 60 key performance indicators (KPIs) in more detail than ever before. Compared to the last report for the 2021/2022 financial year, the scope has thus doubled. The key figures determined also provide the basis for a binding sustainability roadmap. "This year's very comprehensive report is a great achievement by the team. And we can clearly see from this where we still need to improve," says Bernard Schäferbarthold, CEO FORVIA HELLA. "Our aim is to effectively anchor and manage sustainability as a central aspect of our business activities in our processes and thus in our day-to-day business". FORVIA HELLA has been reporting on the topic of sustainability since 2018, starting with four KPIs. In the following years, further indicators were gradually added with the aim of creating more transparency about the impact of our own business activities.
The highlights
The Sustainability Report 2023 provides reliable data in all relevant areas of sustainability. The company's CO2 footprint plays an important role in the 'Environment' area. It indicates the amount of CO2 emissions caused by FORVIA HELLA's business activities in 2023. The figure is 10.1 million tons of CO2e (rounded 29% Lighting Division, 40% Electronics Division, 31% Lifecycle Solutions Division), an increase of 4% compared to 2019, which is primarily due to the 16% growth in net product sales during this period. "In 2023, we will not only be able to report on CO2 emissions at company level, but will also be able to report values for the individual Business Groups for the first time," explains Anke Sommermeyer, who heads the Sustainability Office at FORVIA HELLA. “This is a major step forward in terms of the transparent recording and presentation of our climate impact. It also enables us to implement measures in an even more targeted manner in future.” In addition to the CO2 footprint, other important indicators belong to the environmental sustainability field. "We have worked hard and, in a joint effort with the specialist departments, we will be able to report new key figures in 2023," says Annika Kabelitz, responsible for sustainability communication at FORVIA HELLA. For the first time, the 2023 report contains information on the environmental aspects of the circular economy, water, waste and pollution (see picture carousel). Currently, 100 per cent of the main production sites are already certified in accordance with the ISO 14001 environmental standard.
A lot has also happened in the area of social sustainability. The 2023 report includes more data on working conditions and training measures. New KPIs on the proportion of women in managers and professionals positions, the part-time ratio and the proportion of people with disabilities were also integrated.
New information is also disclosed on the third area of sustainability, 'Governance' (sustainable corporate management): In addition to compliance, the company's social commitment is also in the spotlight for the first time. In addition, sustainability was established as a decision-making criterion for purchasing when selecting suppliers in the 2023 financial year. For the first time, the report includes the aspect of 'sustainability in the supply chain' as a proportion of suppliers with a valid sustainability assessment by EcoVadis, one of the world's largest providers of sustainability ratings for companies.
