HELLA Innovation: Local incubator successfully finishes first project with innovative result

  • Semiconductor refrigeration technology as new solution for headlamp demisters
  • HELLA Innovation Center extends a warm welcome to talents coming from HELLA and outside

Nanjing/China, August 7th, 2019. HELLA Fast Forward Shanghai, an innovation center opened by the global automotive supplier HELLA at the end of 2018, awarded the team who excelled with its first finished project. The awarding ceremony was held at HELLA Nanjing Technical Center on August 5th. The team is made up of five HELLA experts coming from lighting and electronics. It was based on a patent granted to a team member, which provides a solution for a headlamp demister. The project successfully transformed the idea to a real product by utilizing HELLA’s rich development resources in the area of lighting and electronics. It just took one hundred days to realize this idea-to-product transformation.

Fogging in LED headlamps has been a long-time tricky issue for both automotive manufacturers and consumers. Water condenses due to the temperature inside the headlamps and the vapor will then disfigure the lamps and degrade its illumination performance. Against this background, the defogging solution for headlamps proposed by the innovation team won HELLA’s support and funding, after rigorous evaluation and screening. With a 100-day effort, the team transformed its innovative idea into a practical product. On the strength of HELLA’s rich R&D resources in lighting and electronics, the team applied the semiconductor refrigeration technology to headlamps via its self-developed lighting control system. It enables the water vapor to condense to then flow out of the headlamps. This consequentially avoids fogging in the lampshade.

Qin Kai, leader of the project, said: “HELLA’s incubation activities provide a platform for staff innovations, making creativity possible and applicable. Meanwhile, they also inspire the staff to explore and innovate so as to contribute more to future mobility. During the incubation process, HELLA acts as both an investor and a participator, helping the team to reduce detours and increase the probability of success.”

With the incubator in Shanghai, HELLA strengthens its position in one of the most dynamic international automotive markets and especially intensifies its activities in the field of disruptive innovations. The company aims to shape future mobility with innovations brought by the combination of HELLAs longstanding expertise in the auto parts industry and the huge innovation potential in China. The incubator works on disruptive business models along automotive market trends such as digitalization, connectivity, electrification and autonomous driving as well as software and services and lighting technology. They are also intensifying cooperation with start-ups and young companies.

With the successful incubation of the first project and the imminent launch of a new phase of innovation activities, HELLA welcomes innovation talents from HELLA and the outside.
