Statutory regulations

The general legal position: HELLA gives you the facts.

Daytime running light simply increases road safety. Official studies also back this up.
Since February 2011, it has been a requirement for all new passenger vehicles in the ECE registration area to be equipped with daytime running light. And since August 2012, it has also been a requirement for new commercial vehicles in the ECE registration area to be equipped with daytime running lights.
HELLA would therefore at this point like to give you an overview of the current legal situation.

Type approval

The law in Germany states that a special type approval must be obtained before daytime running lights can be installed in passenger vehicles and CVs. Special markings are provided to prove that HELLA daytime running lights have passed all the necessary type tests:

The type approval marking "RL" stands for daytime running light.
ECE marking, e.g. "E1" - the country code 1 stands for Germany (for example)
Type approval number, e.g. "00 1722" - the first two digits describe the version of the regulation (2000 in this example), the digits at the end represent the individual number per light.

You can view an excerpt from the general approval certificate and an example of a type approval document here:

To prevent any unpleasant surprises, you are advised to steer clear of dubious "alternative solutions" and opt instead for the officially tested and approved HELLA daytime running lights. An example of this is dimmed daytime running light substitute electronics: Although they can dim the low beam by up to 50%, a level similar to daytime running light, the output is at the same time reduced to the extent that the approval for the headlight is invalidated. This means that not only would you be driving without daytime running light, your low beam lights would not be working properly either, which would not be an ideal solution at the best of times even if you were not stopped and checked by the police. We therefore recommend: Put quality first and choose HELLA daytime running lights.

Mounting specifications

In Germany, different mounting options for motor homes and transporters are permitted by law. However, specifications exist in relation to the clearances and reflector beam angles and these must be observed:

  • "If the light is used as a position light, it must be mounted at a height of at least 250 mm and be no further than 400 mm from the outside.
  • **In the case of vehicles with a width of < 1,300 mm, the distance must be at least 400 mm.
  • When the daytime running light is used as a position light, the standard position light must be permanently disabled in accordance with ECE-R-48.

Check online for more information on other legal requirements. See the relevant assembly instructions for more detailed information.
