The air conditioning compressor is usually driven by the engine via
a V-belt or ribbed V-belt. This unit compresses or transports the
refrigerant through the system. There are different compressor
designs available. The refrigerant is compressed as it is suctioned
into the compressor in a gaseous form at a low temperature from
the evaporator. It is then forwarded in gaseous form at a high temperature
and under high pressure to the condenser.
The dimensioning of the compressor has to be adapted to the
system size. The compressor is filled with special oil for lubrication
purposes. Part of the oil circulates with the refrigerant through the
air conditioning system. The most frequent causes of failure are
bearing damage and leaks. These are often the result of a lack of
servicing.
