From a top level, energy management can be equated with charge balancing as it balances the electric energy required by the consumers with the energy made available by generator and battery. Thus, the energy management provides a balance between generated, saved and needed energy.

In today's common power networks this means that the energy of the generator has to suffice as the only generator for a large number of consumers. It can happen that the energy quantity supplied by the generator is insufficient in certain driving situations.
In this case, the additional energy required has to be covered by the battery as only energy storage. Thus, or by means of idling consumption like e.g. Infotainment the battery discharges. It is then the task of the energy management to re-establish the balance and to reload the battery in energetically favorable conditions.
The efficient generation of electric energy, intelligent distribution and optimized storing enable a maximum of availability and reliability of the different functions in the car, despite further electric equipment.
